FPUL Fall Dinner: "Inside Soviet Culture: The Power of Image"
Special guest speakers Thomas Keenan, Slavic East European and Eurasian Studies librarian, and Anna Meerson, special collections assistant, will showcase components of Princeton University Library’s collections of graphic-arts works from the Soviet Union. Their talk will look at four facets of the collections: examples of illustrated periodicals, illustrated sheet music, children’s books, and posters. They will discuss the iconographies and visual strategies at work in the images and the agendas behind them.
In recent years, historians, social-science and humanities scholars working on the Soviet Union have taken aim at the complex visual languages used for the non-verbal transmission of ideological, social, and cultural messages through different periods of the Soviet era. Princeton’s collections of documents of these rich and compelling visual idioms have been greatly expanding over the past few years and have become one of the most important collections of Soviet visual culture in North America.
